Music, like other pleasures in life, comes in different forms and expressions. It could be a simple arrangement of beats, or a voice singing a song – music is a channel of creative expression. It’s the expression of one’s emotions, heart and soul. Thus, when we heard that the ICOM’s Night Out is back this year with an amazing line-up of musicians, the Editorial team caught up with Joanna Marie Gough, the producer behind the event, for a cuppa.

Tell us more about ICOM’s Night Out 2!
ICOM’s Night Out began as a performance of Experimental Music, a stage given to the idea of showcasing and appreciating the different genres of music from all over. It’s a stage for talents to create and innovate. Last year, we showcased music from The Apparently Band (who just won Xplay2010), violinist Eugene Yeo, Terry Tim (with his Lap Tap acoustic guitar style), Loh Ui Li (fusion pianist) and RnB/Ska Band.

So who will spice up the stage this time round?
Our line-up for this 29 January are very diversified. We have A Stomp!!! who focuses on rhythmic music, Muted Channel, 8AM, and Star Sally (an all-girl band where every girl will NOT be playing their principal instrument).

How does it work for Star Sally – not playing their principal instrument?
Basically the Bassist will be on the drums, the Keyboardist will be on the guitar, the Vocalist will be on the keyboard – for example. But no worries, I’ve heard them, they sound really good.

Let’s talk more about yourself. How did you come to be the producer of this production?
Music is expressed in many ways, many different Genres, many Styles. During last year’s Final Friday Performance (being the producer), I realized that many of these musicians have passions of which the industry provided no stage for them. Thus, I began looking for an experimental stage and when given the opportunity, I took the chance to create ICOM’s Night Out. It’s the perfect stage that encourages us, students, to be ourselves.

I started this on the grounds the basis that there just aren’t enough platforms for different styles of music and creative expression. For most music, it’s derivative are from Pop Culture. The platforms are essential to encourage undiscovered talents. Talents come from all forms and in all styles. Rather, for the talent to conform to the wants of the industry, we should be nurturing the individualistic talents that we have. And thus, ICOM’s Night Out came about encouraging musicians to be themselves when performing.

What can audience expect from ICOM’s Night Out 2?
What the audience can expect from the production is a Tribute to Creativity in Music. For the Series of 2011, we’ve got lined up vocals ranging from Barber Shop to Choirs, Dream Theatre Covers, Classical Crossovers and many more. We encourage our audience to embrace the many genres of music as they discover our talents.

Is there anything else you want to share with us?
The show is best watched in groups of friends and great company. Come one and bring all! Hope to see you all from the stage.

ICOM’s Night Out 2 takes place this 29 January at the Actor’s Studio (Lot 10). Check out more details at their Facebook Event page (click here).
